Does NLP Improve Self Esteem?

In 1993, Joe and I signed up for a psychotherapy certificate that included Hypnotherapy and this thing called NLP. We’d never heard of it before but it was part of the course so we gave it a go. At first I wasn’t sure if it was as powerful as the trainers said.

Working first as a therapist and then later in business, I began to use NLP to help people make changes in their lives. The results were incredible but there was no real academic research to provide evidence that NLP works, even though I knew from experience that it did.

A few years ago I took a Masters Degree in Applied Positive Psychology and I decided the time had come for me to take some action. The focus of my dissertation was to explore evidence that NLP does improve Self Esteem and Well Being …. that NLP works!

I started with a pilot study where the participants were all taking part in an NLP Practitioner training. I used questionnaires to measure their self esteem and well being at three points in time, just before the training, just after and then six weeks later.

All the participants took part in a full NLP Practitioner training learning all the basic principles and interventions. As part of that process they experienced the processes in relation to real issues in their lives. This allowed them to challenge limiting beliefs that had been holding them back and make lasting changes. All of this impacted on their general level of self esteem and self belief. Participants reported massive positive changes in their experience of life.

The results of the study were positive and statistically significant. If you would like to read my pilot study write up you can find it on our website

Over the next few weeks I will be writing more about the full study involving 60 people per workshop and telling you more about the processes used. You will also be able to sign up for a free MP3 audio of two parts of the original workshop.
